The Thatched Cottage Inn

The room was cozy and the place itself is lovely, but service was a real problem. One manager seemed to be handling everything, with a chef appearing when needed, and no other staff around. We were told a few times that continental breakfast was included, although a full English is advertised. What we actually got was toast, a small amount of cereal, tea and coffee. The manager said there would also be croissants, yoghurt and fruit, but none appeared on either morning. On the second morning I had to find and restock the bread, cereal, milk and bowls myself. Nice place and area, disappointing service.

The bathroom was dirty, the tap dripped, and its wall light didn't work, so I had to switch on the main light and woke my husband. The food menu was mostly things with chips, with no healthy salad options, and I had to ask for vegetables. There wasn't much choice on the wine list and no sparkling wine. A young man was left alone to run the bar, serve tables and clean, apologizing even though it wasn't his fault. The owners should have been the ones apologizing. We won't be back.

Dinner was very nice and the service with the meal was good. The room was pleasant enough, though the double bed felt very small. We also couldn't get drinking water in the room, so I had to buy it at the bar and got the last two bottles. We were told our booking included a full English breakfast, but that wasn't available. They didn't seem set up to serve breakfast at all. When we asked, we were told there was cereal, but no milk. There seemed to be very few staff and little stock.

My mum and I went in for lunch, but nobody came to greet us at the bar. After waiting ten minutes, I knocked on the kitchen door. The woman who came out seemed to think I was being unreasonable when I asked if we could get food. She said there was a private wake and, in an aggressive, very rude tone, told us no. There were no signs saying the pub was closed to the public for the event, and she made us feel stupid for having come in. I won't set foot in this pub again.
