The Grange at Oborne

The countryside around it was wonderfully quiet and peaceful. I was working nearby and stayed for one night, with breakfast included, then had dinner there as well. My room was roomy and comfortable, with a small terrace and an outdoor table, though it was too cold for me to sit outside. Before dinner I could relax with a drink in the lounge while choosing from the menu. The lamb was tender and nicely cooked. Breakfast was very good, and came quickly; with more time, I’d have liked to take it at a slower pace. I had the Full English with poached eggs.

Our family and friends enjoyed a relaxed breakfast together after the celebration, with several guests having travelled a long way and staying overnight at the hotel. We held a special birthday gathering for around 30 people in the Wessex Room, and the food and wines drew lots of compliments. Some of the wines came from vineyards in Dorset & Devon, which we had chosen ourselves. The hotel has plenty of character and feels special without being pretentious. Jon & Jenny were helpful and efficient from the outset, and the whole team looking after us was polite and attentive. It was good value, and for this kind and size of event, it may well be the best venue in the area. Thank you to The Grange for such a memorable experience.

We only live up the road, so can't say anything about the rooms, but we had a lovely Saturday lunch on 31st January. The snug was a nice spot to settle in with a G&T and look over the menu, and the quirky interior, with decanters used as light shades, was great fun. We were greeted warmly. For mains, I had the roast chicken and my husband had the pork; both were beautifully presented, very well cooked, and we'd happily order them again. The smoked salmon starter was light and refreshing, while my husband's butterbean & thyme soup was, he said, the best he'd ever tasted. We finished with crème brûlée and ice cream, both delicious and nicely presented. Our table looked out over the gardens, which I imagine are lovely in summer. Warm welcome, lovely food, and we'd readily recommend The Grange.

The decorated Happy Birthday cheese board was a lovely touch for our friend's 95th birthday. Our knitting group had lunch there yesterday, and Jonathan, Jenny and the rest of the staff were so attentive that the occasion felt extra special. They also took care of dietary requests. The food, service and beautiful restaurant all helped make her birthday a very special one. We highly recommend The Grange and plan to return. Thanks from all of us.
