The Lion Hotel Shrewsbury

We ended up here overnight after Storm Goretti caused problems with our trains, and the staff we met were friendly and did their best to sort out an issue quickly. The rooms were clean, a comfortable size and had tea and coffee facilities. The beds were comfortable too, though the rooms look a bit dated and could use an update. That didn't spoil our stay. I don't think breakfast is available at the hotel, but there are plenty of nearby places to get some. It's about a ten minute walk from the station, with a longer uphill walk in the snow. I'd recommend it if you need somewhere to stay.

The reception was lovely and full of character, but our room was a letdown. It was very basic, with just one uncomfortable wooden chair, and didn't look like the photos on the website. The usual tea and coffee things were there. The room itself was adequately clean, though the corridors and stairs weren't hoovered during our stay, which we cut short. We were put on the third floor and there was no lift. Nobody had mentioned that, and we wouldn't have booked if we'd known. The bar had no beer apart from bottled Bud, and they didn't offer hot drinks, which would have been nice while sitting in the surroundings. Sorry, but we won't stay again.

I was only there for a short business meeting. The place looks as if very little has changed in a few hundred years, which can be charming, but the service feels just as stuck in the past. At the bar they couldn't offer draught beer, hot drinks or soda water.

Awful place. The reception staff were unfriendly, and after going up to the room I left pretty quickly. It was in terrible shape, way beyond just dated. The whole place should have been updated years ago. I'd spend a little extra to stay somewhere you can actually feel comfortable.
