We found the afternoon tea disappointing. The vegetarian option was egg and cheese sandwiches with a rather challenging scone, while the meat eater got one finger sandwich with ham added. The coffee was only warm, though they did refill it when asked. The restaurant and conservatory were being renovated, and nobody had told us beforehand. The staff weren’t to blame, but the tea itself was very basic and uninspired.

The carvery food was disappointing, with only pork and beef to choose from, four vegetables and potatoes without any crispness. We needed a lot of salt. We skipped dessert because we were worried about waiting longer, asked for the bill ahead of time and left. We won’t be back. There were five of us, three adults and two children, arriving for Sunday lunch. We found our way through the hotel to the restaurant, waited briefly to be seated and got the carvery menus. Then the delays began. We were told someone would take our drinks order soon, but that meant something different to us. After a long wait, we ordered drinks and were sent to the carvery. When we got back to the table, none had arrived, and there wasn’t even table water. We had to prompt three staff before four of the five drinks came, ten minutes after we sat down. The diet coke was still missing. The dining room was bright and loud, with plenty of staff busy at tasks that weren’t clear, and no real atmosphere. My dissatisfaction with this place seems never-ending.

The spot beside the Leeds and Liverpool canal is fantastic. The food and drinks are overpriced, and the restaurant seems to give coach tour bookings a lesser menu and service than individual parties.

The reception area was nice, and the hotel is in a lovely location near hills with a good view at breakfast. The price was affordable, but the rooms felt dated and off-putting, from the carpet and furniture to the decor and bathroom. The bed was comfortable. Breakfast was probably the worst I’ve ever had. The buffet had very few choices, tasted horrible, and every mug was dirty. The hotel really needs to review breakfast and update the rooms.

We arrived at 4 expecting the room to be ready, but ended up waiting over an hour. If we’d arrived at noon, I wouldn’t have expected it to be made up yet. This really spoiled the getaway we’d been looking forward to, and put us off ordering breakfast or eating there that evening. No compensation was offered, even though we were two tired older women waiting to freshen up and relax.
