The apartment felt grubby and tired, and security was a concern from the start because the outer doors don’t lock, so anyone can get into the building. It smelled of cigarette smoke. Half the windows wouldn’t open, and only two main blinds worked properly; the others had to be pulled up and down by hand. The bedroom heater was broken, melted, and leaking fluid, while the lounge heater couldn’t warm the room enough. The washing machine ran, but its door wouldn’t open. The shower hose was coming off, the bathroom smelled strange, and the hob was rusty. The freezer compartment was dirty and frozen up. The kitchen utensils were okay, but there weren’t enough plates, bowls, or glasses. There was out-of-date soy sauce, a dirty salt pot, and a filthy pepper shaker. One sofa bed was completely broken and the other barely usable. The bin area was disgusting, and another resident was dumping mattresses and rubbish in the corridors. Maybe the photos set my expectations too high, but in person the place was dirty and lacked security.

The apartment was comfortable and clean, which made for a good weekend. A few things could’ve made it easier: there was no Wi-Fi and no 4G, and the shower kept switching between freezing and scalding with barely any pressure. Since we were on a girls’ trip and going out at night, a full-length mirror would’ve helped. The lift wasn’t working either, and the flat is on the top floor. Still, those were smaller issues in an otherwise good stay.

The only real drawback was having just one toilet and shower for a place that sleeps six. A separate toilet would’ve been useful. We’ve stayed here twice now, and both times the beds were comfortable, towels were supplied, and the kitchen had what we needed. There’s even an Xbox.

If you’re thinking of a long-term rental here, expect damp and mould, and you might also run into flooding more than once. The agency and landlord did nothing to address it. I’d look for somewhere else and a different landlord, since problems don’t seem to get dealt with on time.

I booked through Expedia on Sunday for a Wednesday stay. By Tuesday, I’d received an email apparently from Castle Point Apartments saying they were overbooked and had to cancel my booking. Expedia didn’t contact me. They offered to help find somewhere else, but the option they suggested wasn’t suitable for the four people I’d booked for, as it was for two. Pretty disappointing. I tried calling, but it kept going to voicemail.
