The Fox made a difficult few weeks much easier while my dog was having treatment at RVC. We were both comfortable, and the food was good, but it was the staff's kindness and thoughtfulness that really stayed with me. Leaving was surprisingly hard. I feel lucky we got to stay there.

Getting there from the train station was easy since the bus stop is right across from the inn. Inside, it was clean and quiet, with a comfy bed and warm, lovely spaces. Everyone on staff was kind and helpful. A beautiful, cozy place, and I'd gladly come back.

The hotel is quirky, clean and welcoming, and handy for both the M25 and M1. I had a quiet room after asking to move from the one over the kitchen, which was constantly noisy. Thanks to the team for sorting that out on a very busy bank holiday Monday. The check-in and bar staff gave me a great welcome, dinner was tasty, and there was a comprehensive drinks list. Breakfast, served until 9:30, suited me well and was tasty too. I'd be happy to stay again.

Good value, with a good breakfast. The new Chef seems to have made a difference, and Sue, who served breakfast, was friendly and keen to make the experience a good one. It's well placed for getting into St Albans, and I'd recommend it as a good local hotel.

The hotel side of the Colney Fox has a serious comfort problem. I've had guests stay twice, once during the hottest day of the year and once during the coldest. There were no fans, and the windows don't open, so the rooms became ovens in the heat. In the cold, the radiators needed bleeding and were mostly cold with only warm patches, leaving the rooms like fridges. The plug-in oil heater supplied had a broken leg, so it had to be balanced directly on the carpet. It's described as a dog friendly hotel, but staff said there was nothing they could do about a dog barking all night in the next room. Also, reviews for the rooms are combined with reviews for the pub, which gives the hotel side what I feel is a false impression of success and acceptability. I won't send guests there again. Holiday Inn is about a five-minute walk away.
