Bridgewood House

We were charged in advance for two nights, but arrived six minutes after check-in time and the barman refused to let us in. He said he would mark us as a no-show and sell the room to someone else. We were told we’d get the second night refunded, but that never happened. So we were stranded, even though the room we’d paid for was empty, and everywhere else was booked. There was no warning that check-in would be refused from 8pm, despite the bar being open. Looking at the reviews below, it seems this has happened to several people. Terrible customer service.

After a day cycling, this was a convenient and inexpensive place to stop, with a private bathroom and secure bike storage. The bathroom was tiny, but everything worked. The shower was basic, and I had to run the hot tap for a while to get the water to temperature. I wasn’t expecting breakfast, so the continental selection was a nice extra. I’d stay again on another overnight ride.

We arrived around 8.30, just after the check-in cutoff, though nobody had told us that 8pm was the deadline. We’d driven more than four hours with three children under three, including a newborn, and needed to feed and change them. The staff said it wasn’t their problem and told us to go away. We begged them to help, but they seemed happy for us to sleep in the car. We’d already paid, so having to pay another hotel was worrying, but we had no choice. Other local hotels we called were mostly full, yet they all tried to rearrange things to help rather than leave a newborn stranded. One kind hotel freed up two rooms for us, an hour’s drive away. I won’t forget being turned away with three crying babies after looking forward to getting them fed and settled. Cold, heartless staff. Please avoid this place.

The place is well situated and the staff were friendly and helpful. It was clean, too. The rooms are very basic, more like a hostel: you can hear people talking next door, the beds squeak, and the shower is either on or off and gets extremely hot. There was also a faint cigarette smell in the room.
