That game pie was great, and we finished with tiramisu, brownie and crumble, all superb. But the roasts were the real stars: chicken, beef and a vegan butternut squash, kale and apricot tart. The meat was apparently very good, and the portions were generous. Gravy and Yorkshire puddings were ridiculously good, and the vegetables were fresh, green and delicious. We’d booked Sunday lunch at the Trooper. My in-laws had thought it was closed, so they were delighted to hear it was open. We had some nice drinks at the bar first. There was a good vegetarian menu, and seeing a vegetarian dish on the specials board is something you almost never see. Can’t recommend The Trooper enough. It’s fabulous 👌

Such a lovely old pub in a beautiful spot, but the food took over an hour to arrive for our group of eight, even though it wasn’t busy. We later learned there was only one person working in the kitchen. It would have helped if we’d been told that when we arrived. The food itself was average.

The room had a comfy bed and a good, powerful shower. The complimentary coffee machine and tasty pods were a nice touch, and the included continental breakfast was basic but enough for me. Staff were friendly, and I had a very pleasant stay. I’d definitely stay with them again.

We tried the new menu for 2026 at the Trooper Inn, and it was a good meal. The sweet chilli prawns and house pate starters were both delicious, as were the chicken curry of the day and hunter’s chicken. There’s a great range of good home-cooked food, including lots of new dishes, and the portions are generous. They’re happy to make changes where possible if you don’t like something or are on a diet. I swapped chips for bubble and squeak, which felt much healthier. We didn’t stay, but we’ll be back very soon. Thank you!

I’ve been staying at The Trooper during the week for two months, and it’s the only place I’d want to stay. Chris, the owner, made me feel welcome from day one and talked to me like I was a local. The locals were friendly and inviting too, so I never felt out of place. Hassan is an absolute gentleman, and all the staff kept up that same level of service. There’s a brilliant choice of beers and drinks. If you like Guinness, Camden Stout could be your next favourite. And pickled onions and eggs behind the bar? They just go perfectly with a pint. The food’s a step beyond ordinary pub food. The weekly specials always appeal to me, and this week there’s pan-fried salmon, a healthy, hearty meal. Jamie, the chef, clearly loves what he does. It’s all homemade, proper food. Maybe it’s Michelin Star worthy, you can decide. The rooms are spotless, the beds are comfy, and the amenities are great. Even Premier Inns don’t give you complimentary biscuits anymore. This is much more than just a room above a pub or pub food. I’ve only been here for work, which is a shame. I’d come back in a heartbeat for a little vacation. There are plenty of walks and beautiful scenery, so it’s one to consider if you like hiking. Chris, Hassan, Jamie and the whole team, thanks again for everything. You’ve been fantastic. Looking forward to another catch-up with a pint in hand, and a pickled onion.
