A month after our first call, we rang again because the refund hadn’t arrived. A staff member then told us it would come through in 3-5 working days. When we called another month later, the manager said we couldn’t get a refund without insurance. I understand that policy, but it should have been explained from the start instead of giving us months of hope and disrupting our plans. We’d spotted a mistake seconds after booking and phoned the hotel within that same minute to ask if a refund might be possible. We knew it was a long shot, but the reply was, “Yes, that should be fine.” We were directly told we’d be refunded, so I believe they should honour that, out of principle. The staff may have meant well, but they clearly hadn’t been trained on the policy. I can’t recommend the service here.

The staff were friendly and great to chat with, and the food and drinks were very reasonably priced. There was a decent menu to pick from, and the meal was really good. I stopped in for a quick bite while passing through and will be back soon.

The food was brilliant and well priced in both the restaurant and bar, and the locals were fantastic. It’s a proper traditional local pub, full of character, with really easy parking. You can hear the trains go by, but with a name like the beacon & railway inn, that’s to be expected. They didn’t wake me or spoil the stay. Our rooms were comfortable and cool. I booked direct, but when I arrived my name wasn’t on the room list. Not great, though the landlady sorted it quickly. The rooms are old fashioned, sure, but it’s an old Railway inn from 1854, so get a grip. Give it a try, you might be surprised. I’ll be back.

Some dishes on the menu were marked homemade, and they really tasted that way, nothing like the bulk food you get elsewhere. The atmosphere was amazing, and I felt welcome as soon as I arrived. I’ll definitely come back.
