I was working away and stayed for two nights, having dinner here both evenings. Neither meal disappointed. The game pie was absolutely fantastic, and I wasn’t expecting food this good. The Guinness was perfect too. It’s a shame it’s three hours from my house or it’d be my regular. The chef is top notch, and the bar staff know how to keep a pint and are friendly.

The staff were friendly enough, and breakfast was good. We stayed for two nights over a short Christmas break, though parking was tricky in the busy holiday period, especially with a larger car. The room had the basics, but felt a little cramped for the two of us and our dog.

The location worked well for us, near the railway and town, with a free car park next door. My friend and I stayed two nights on a bed and breakfast basis. My loft room had been upgraded to a four-person room, which gave me loads of space, and it was clean with plenty of basic tea, coffee, biscuits and bottled water. My friend's room was clean too, though it could do with redecorating. In warm weather, bring earplugs, as the main road nearby is busy. Breakfast was adequate: cereal, fruit juice and a bowl of fruit, plus amazing cooked breakfasts on both mornings. A toast rack and more tea or coffee would have helped. I'm sure staff would bring them if asked, but they seemed to disappear after serving us. We didn't use the bar or restaurant, though both always looked busy. It's good value and clean, so I'd come back, hoping for a redecorated room.

The food menu has plenty of variety, including a good choice for vegetarians, and the Friday fish and chips deal came with a free drink. I visited on a Friday evening with friends, my first time since the new management, and the bar and restaurant were both busy with a friendly feel. Service was a bit slow and our table was sticky, so four stars from me. I'll be back to try the roast soon 😁
