The staff were kind and helpful, but that was about the only good part of my stay. The beds were rock hard, and I could hear everything from the rooms next door, so getting a decent night’s sleep or relaxing was impossible. The rooms felt very old and as if they hadn’t been cleaned properly in ages. As a young woman travelling alone, I felt unsafe, and the condition of the hotel did nothing to make me feel secure or comfortable. It seemed clear that the property hadn’t had money spent on upkeep or improvements. Breakfast was awful too. Everything was undercooked, the bacon was so chewy I had to spit it out, and I could only pick at the food. I wouldn’t stay again or recommend it.

The food was delicious and served really hot, and we all thoroughly enjoyed our festive lunch. The staff were lovely and took great care to reassure us and share all the relevant information when one person in our party mentioned an egg allergy.

The bed was the main problem. It was so uncomfortable that I think I’d have slept better on the sofa, or even the floor. Our room was okay for one night for the price, though it was noisy, needed a refill, and had clearly seen better days. We chose the Best Western George Hotel because Best Western advertised free breakfast for people signing up to its offer. On arrival, the receptionist said the hotel didn’t provide that free breakfast, which was disappointing since it was one of the main reasons we booked. The offer was on their own site when you Google it. Between that confusion and the bed, I wouldn’t stay there again.

We stopped in on our way out for the weekend, and even though it was busy, it didn’t feel that way. I had the Bass with mussels, and my partner chose the vegan burger. We finished with Bakewell tart for me and choc brownie for Lou. Pauline was so friendly and attentive, and made us feel more than welcome. Just be ready to jump out of your skin when they let you know your food is ready.

The room was by the outdoor drop-off area, where vehicles kept their engines running and disturbed our sleep. The carpet was filthy and the TV didn’t work, though the friendly maintenance man fixed it promptly. We paid extra for our dog but weren’t even given a dog bowl. I suggested putting up signs asking drivers to switch off their engines. The receptionist was friendly when we arrived, as were the service staff we met, but the restaurant staff were quite the opposite. I was also disappointed that we had to pay for breakfast when Best Western advertises free breakfasts in all its adverts.
