Herston Caravan & Campsite

The walk to the showers from the camping area is a bit of a trek, but that was a minor issue. I really liked the food van, run by two lovely ladies, and the live music on Sunday night. You can hear the Steam Trains passing in the valley just over the hedge, and see them from the gate. There’s also a footpath into Swanage that crosses a field and a quaint bridge before joining Victoria Road. There’s a shop on site, though I didn’t go in, so I can’t comment on it. The new swimming pool and restaurant should make the place even better once they’re built. Great campsite.

The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, and getting into town was easy and quick. The views were amazing too. We slept in tents, and the beds were comfy and kept the wind out when the weather changed. One of the best places I’ve ever stayed, and we’ll definitely be back!

The bell tent was spacious and had comfortable beds, and we enjoyed the nice walk into swanage. The location is great, but this was our second stay and nothing seemed improved since the year before. It’s a shame, because the place could be beautiful with a bit more care. The grounds looked overgrown, with long weeds everywhere that you had to step over. The site felt tired and poorly maintained. The toilets and showers were okay, but could have been cleaner. There was no hot water at the toilet hand basins, and although the shower had good pressure, its temperature kept changing. Check-in was very basic, with no information apart from details about the food van. Shame really.

There’s a lovely walk from here into Swanage and down to the beach, and a shop on site for basic needs. A food hut is open three or four nights a week if you don’t fancy cooking. Staff are friendly and helpful, and you can arrive, get your chairs out and start relaxing. Fire pits are allowed as long as they’re raised off the ground. We’ve stayed here over the last few years and really enjoy it. There are lots of pitches, laid out without straight lines and not mown to within an inch of their lives, just how we like it. They’re in the middle of adding a new bar and gym, which should be great when finished. It’s a great little site in a fantastic location. If you prefer the rules and fuss of caravan and motorhome sites, this probably isn’t for you. 🤷🏼‍♀️
