The staff were friendly enough, but nobody asked how the food was, even with so much left on our plates. We left disappointed, having paid for a meal we could have made better at home in a nicer setting. This was the worst Sunday lunch we’ve had. My family’s meals were all bland, and none of the food tasted fresh. The pork was dry, the roast potatoes rubbery, and the bowl of vegetables was a sad little offering. My vegetable loaf was inedible, and nothing was hot enough. We skipped dessert because the meal had been so bad. The pub itself felt cold and joyless.
I’ve been coming here for years for the homemade fish pie. The cheese sauce always makes me smile, and it comes with vegetables in a small bowl. They’ve presented the pie in different ways over the years, but I can see why they don’t keep adding things to the menu. They stick to their values. I’ve attached three photos from different years.
The staff are really nice, and the pub does good, honest pub food. The calves’ liver is nice, though it could be cut thinner. Cheesy chips are good too, if that’s your thing. It’s a pub, not cordon bleu.
The rooms were so basic they felt miserable, and the pub food was forgettable. The place came across as tired, dated and joyless, with an atmosphere that felt depressing instead of cosy. I stayed once and regretted it right away. I won’t be back.
The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the staff were friendly. Breakfast costs extra, but I thought it was worth paying for. We also had dinner there one evening and really enjoyed it. We chose the place because it was close to Swindon and made it easy to get to Stonehenge and Avebury. I’m sure we’ll return.
