Rebecca went out of her way to help us through the disruption caused by the snow and was extremely accommodating. We had a great meal, and the fish and chips were outstanding. They even offered gluten-free batter. A lovely family-owned business.

The setting is lovely, beside the park and river and close to downtown Thurso. We ate here too: the lamb and steak were a little gristly, though both were cooked to order and tasted good. It was one of the better meals we had in Scotland. The owners were friendly when we met them at the bar, and the rest of the service was just as warm. Our room was small but very comfortable; others in our party had much larger rooms.

We were travelling as a group and had a horrible stay. The owner said he had been trying to reach us all day, but when we asked for details he got angry and kept saying we could leave if we didn't like it. It left us feeling like we were being scammed. We were pressured into eating at the hotel despite having reservations elsewhere, and he wouldn't let us into our rooms unless we agreed. He was rude and nearly aggressive, making everyone feel unwelcome. We felt we had no choice but to eat there. The burgers were bland and overcooked, the fish greasy, and the chips the worst we'd had in Scotland. When we gave honest feedback, he again threatened to throw us out. The young people working in the bar and restaurant, possibly the owner's children, looked miserable, and nobody had a kind word for us. Even the dog looked beaten and frightened. During the night, the fire alarm control panel in the entrance hall kept blaring. With no staff around, I had to reset it every hour, so we barely slept. There wasn't even an apology in the morning. When I first posted this review, the owner threatened to throw out the next group staying there, so I waited until now to repost. A terrible, awful man.

I gave the hotel time to respond, but they showed no interest. This is the email I sent after speaking with the receptionist on Monday night, October 13. I arrived exhausted and didn't notice the state of the room at first. Once I was walking around barefoot, I saw black hair all over the bathroom. I tried to clean it up and thought I'd got it all, but found more in the bed and pillows when I checked in the morning. I had assumed the room would be clean, and that was clearly a mistake. I didn't sleep well. The photo I took makes it clear the room hadn't been cleaned. I haven't reviewed the hotel on Booking.com yet because I'm giving you a chance to refund my money, which you should do without excuses. The photo is proof enough. Very unsatisfied customer.
