The Olde Malthouse

Tintagel is beautiful whatever the weather, and we had a great stay with my wife and our Boxer. Freya welcomed us, showed us to the room and booked dinner. The food was outstanding, and she handled the bar and service on her own incredibly well. The rooms weren’t perfect, but were lovely overall. My wife had a ghostly encounter at 3am and barely slept after that, while I slept fine! Daisy was pleasant at breakfast and gave our dog a sausage. The only breakfast downside was that the food seemed to have been prepared quite a while ahead and kept under heat lamps, though it was still tasty. The owner should be proud of Freya’s work ethic. I wouldn’t hesitate to hire her.

Our car broke down nearby, so we needed somewhere to wait for a while. We found this lovely pub, all warmly decorated with a roaring fire, and decided to eat since we were enjoying ourselves. The vegetarian choices were amazing, and the service was great. If we’re in the area again, we’ll definitely come back. Thank you!

The food felt more like restaurant cooking than the classic pub menus elsewhere in the village. We had the pork belly with great cabbage, and my wife’s chicken cassoulet was nicely cooked and full of flavour. The sticky toffee pudding was delicious too, though I’d have liked clotted cream or homemade custard instead of ice cream. Service was nice, especially from the woman seating guests, who checked that all was well. It’s a lovely pub and we’d eat here again. I didn’t stay in the rooms, so can’t comment on them.

We had such a good meal here during Twixmas that part of me wants to keep it to ourselves, but that wouldn’t be fair. The food was fresh, beautifully presented and outstanding. Staff were helpful and very friendly, and the cosy atmosphere had real old-world charm, with the log fires crackling. We’re already planning another visit.
