Our stay at Tongue Hotel was otherwise very enjoyable. The location is fantastic, the food was excellent, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. But a billing issue left a sour taste. Because of an administrative mistake on the hotel’s side, our bill was combined with our friends’ while we were travelling together. That made it clear they had paid substantially less for a superior room, with a better view and extra facilities, while we paid considerably more for an objectively inferior room overlooking the road. I understand dynamic pricing and that hotel rates can vary. Still, such a large gap, with the cheaper room clearly better, made us question the value and fairness. This isn’t about expecting the same price every time. It’s the scale of the difference, and the unfortunate way we found out during our stay. I raised it politely with management afterwards. Their replies were courteous, but they relied entirely on explaining the pricing model and didn’t acknowledge the effect on us or offer a meaningful goodwill gesture. That was disappointing after an otherwise very good stay. I’d strongly recommend paying close attention to room prices and value when booking.

The welcome, room, and superb view were all good. The restaurant was disappointing for the prices they charge. They’d run out of lamb, which can happen, but they’d also run out of vinegar. Without it, my fish and chips were spoiled a little, as the chips were dry. Then there was no bacon at breakfast either. I found the experience disappointing.

Brad from NZ deserves a shout out for the bar service, and drinks were served beautifully. The service overall was outstanding. Our room was excellent and the bed very comfortable, though a fridge would’ve been a nice addition. The food was the weak point. Dinner was okay, but nothing special, and prices felt a little punchy. Breakfast disappointed too, with low quality sausage, overcooked haggis, and very few gluten free options. I’d stay again, but if the prices stay as they are, the food needs to improve.

Stopped by on a chilly winter day while my car was charging and had a hot cappuccino at the cafe. Kathie, the manager, said they’re open throughout the year, so it could be a good option for people travelling the NC500 in winter.

We waited for a table, were seated, and given menus. Then someone came over and told us the kitchen wouldn’t serve anyone else. It wasted valuable time. Be warned, waiting, sitting down, and taking time to choose from the menu doesn’t mean they won’t suddenly stop serving lunch.
