As a woman travelling alone, I felt very safe. Barry was so welcoming, and although I’d booked a single, he upgraded me to a lovely, very large double room. I was pleasantly surprised by the deep bath and huge TV. The price was very reasonable too. The hotel is being renovated, so the upstairs isn’t finished yet, but there’s a lot of potential. The Bar is beautiful, with a lovely terrace that’s very popular. I’d really recommend it.

We stayed last night, me, my daughter and my parents, and what a disgrace this ‘hotel’ is. It’s advertised as a B&B and bar, but there was no bar, no breakfast and no staff. The rooms were dirty, damp and unsafe, with exposed wires all over. I found a used tissue in the bedside drawer, and when I made tea for my daughter, there were white bits floating in it. The inside of the cup was plastered with soap. When we arrived, nobody was there, so we called to find out what was happening. My dad spoke to Pam, who had apparently been there earlier to cook breakfast, which is surprising since they don’t serve breakfast. She agreed to let us in at 4pm. We were stuck in traffic and arrived at 4.20, but Pam called to ask where we were because she’d been waiting since 4. She could have used those extra 20 minutes to pick up a duster and give the rooms a quick once-over, though the cleaning should have been done long before we arrived. Pam needs to spend less time waiting around and more time hiring staff, starting with industrial cleaners.

We stayed the night of 2nd March, and Barry was very pleasant and couldn’t have been more helpful. The beds were so comfortable I’m amazed we managed to leave. It’s a perfect place to stay for the ice hockey games around the corner. The hotel is being renovated, but the rooms were lovely. The Icon bar and terrace will be open soon, and once the renovation is complete, I expect rooms will be in high demand. I’d definitely stay here again.

The owner was welcoming and very apologetic, and I had a great overnight stay. I stayed on Sat 27th before picking up my granddaughter from Manchester airport. Although extensive renovations were underway, the room was warm and cosy, and the bed had plenty of pillows, a quilt and an extra blanket. There was a wall-mounted flat-screen TV, plus a kettle, microwave and fridge for making coffee and warming food. There’s no food on site, but Tesco and Dominoes are two minutes down the road, so that didn’t bother me.

The value for money is excellent. Barry, the owner, is a real gentleman, and nothing is too much trouble for him. The Barrington has a perfect location and position in Altrincham, which is a fine town. It’s undergoing a major refurbishment and, once that’s done, I think it’ll become a hugely popular place to stay. Barry deserves to do well, and I think he will.
