The Somerset Arms

We needed an affordable place while visiting friends, and this was just right for an overnight stay. The room was small but suited us well, with an ensuite shower room. The barmaid gave us a lovely welcome, showed us to the room and explained how to get in and out. The bed was super soft and comfortable, and we slept really well. Breakfast was a full English, expertly cooked. The next morning we walked along the canal, about ten minutes away, through lovely countryside.

The place looks stunning and has loads of style, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Portions were huge, but the food quality let it down badly. Several of us in our group felt unwell after eating and struggled through the rest of the day. My fish and chips were terrible: the chips tasted of oily, old oil, and the fish was hard and full of old oil or fat instead of having a soft batter. It’s disappointing, because this could be a great place, but after this experience I won’t return for food. I might go for a drink with a friend since it looks so nice, but that’s about it.

We arrived for our reservation and were met with a rude attitude from staff, along with lots of dead flies and bugs. We had a coeliac in our group and politely asked what would be suitable. Our server was belittling, saying, “Well, I don’t know, I’m not a coeliac,” and oddly asked if we were on a boat. The food wasn’t fresh: the salad was off, and the pasta was greasy, soggy and overcooked, as if it had been microwaved. I could have cooked much better at home. We were not happy at all and wouldn’t recommend this place. If you want good food and atmosphere, don’t come here.

A friendly village pub with a lovely local feel in the bar. It’s a good spot for lunch or a drink, with a nice pub lunch menu and Sunday roasts. All good 😎 👍 👍 👍
