The mussels were among the best we’ve had, and the crispy salmon fishcake with homemade tartare sauce was delicious. Lunch was so good we left very full. We’ll have to come back for breakfast, too. Getting there was part of the fun: we took the King Harry Ferry, then walked the coast path from Porthcurnick Beach straight to this proper Cornish pub. Inside, there’s loads of character, with traditional beams, cosy alcoves and a roaring fire. Our upstairs window table had a stunning view. The long drive was worth it.

The pub was packed when we arrived, but we were welcomed warmly and looked after really well. The food was delicious, and the fish pie was the best.

The dessert was excellent, and service got more attentive as the evening went on, but I left disappointed. Maybe I was unlucky. We’d booked an evening meal, and although the pub wasn’t busy when we arrived, the staff were chatting with local customers at the bar and seemed to ignore us. Eventually someone showed us to a table. A lad brought our drinks and menu, but when I later asked a passing staff member if we could order, it took a while before anyone came back. The food arrived promptly once we’d ordered, but the haddock in my fish and chips was dry and overcooked for £19. Over £6 for a pint also felt too much. I think they could do well with more customer-focused service and staff training, which is a shame because the slow start and meal left me rather let down.

We just stopped in for a drink and found a cosy, traditional pub with friendly-seeming staff and a good range of local beers on tap. There are comfortable seats inside, a good sea view, and nice outdoor seating too. It’s very dog friendly. We didn’t eat, but the menu looked good, and I love that they have a lobster night.
