The lake views and setting are lovely, and we only stopped after a walk with my wife for a quick drink outside. There isn't really a bar, just bottled beer. I had a beer and she had a glass of wine, then I was told to pay at reception. £19.50 for the two drinks was a shock. I expected prices above a public bar, but this felt like a rip-off. Very, very expensive.

We chose Sharrow Bay for a relative's special birthday, and the sunny weather made the beautiful lake Ulswater and the stunning views even better. The "through the ages" lunch menu was perfectly cooked and presented, with nothing to fault. Service was impeccable but still relaxed and friendly. We can't wait to return.

The staff couldn't have been kinder or more helpful, and our room was comfortable and spacious. Having visited a few years ago as well as a few weeks ago, though, I felt the food had slipped. It was okay, just not great. The place also feels a little stuck in the 80s and could use some money spent bringing it up to date. Maybe that fitted the average age of the guests!

We stayed in one of the dog-friendly cottages, a short walk from the lake shore, and found the grounds lovely. The hotel and restaurant have beautiful views across Ullswater, and the food was fantastic. I had no idea sticky toffee pudding was invented here. A great spot to unwind.

The restaurant staff were polite, helpful and prompt, and afternoon tea was a particularly pleasant treat. We also enjoyed walking through the very well-kept, relaxing gardens during our lovely July night at Sharrow Bay by Ullswater. Breakfast was a little lacklustre, though it was a busy morning and didn't spoil an otherwise great stay. Getting there can be tricky. The roads down to the hotel are very narrow, so you may have to reverse to the nearest passing point. Not ideal for SUVs.
