I’ve been to Hanbury Manor several times for spa days over the years, but this last visit was disappointing. The day costs £75 for spa access and a two-course lunch, without even including a drink. If you’re staying at the hotel it can be a nice extra, but for a day visit there are better-value spas nearby. It’s gone downhill while the price has gone up, and I’d be reluctant to return. We paid extra for massages, but that hadn’t been mentioned in the email, so my partner didn’t know he’d need to pay more. At check-in there was a mix-up, and my locker didn’t work. I had to go back to reception twice, and the replacement locker already had someone else’s things inside. Not a relaxing start. The spa is okay, nothing special. For that price, I’d expect the mould on the window and vents to be cleaned, and someone to come round a couple of times to clear away cups and things guests had left. By 3pm the place looked a mess. People kept walking around near the pool in trainers, so it didn’t feel secluded or relaxing. Apparently you have the day, but the pool is closed for aqua in the morning, then from 3.45pm kids arrive for swimming lessons and it gets noisy. Lunch was mediocre. The chicken wings starter was unappetising, with barely any meat and sauce that was too hot. The main was okay, but the sticky toffee pudding clearly wasn’t homemade. My treatment was fine. My partner, though, said it was the worst massage he’d ever had. The masseuse’s hands were dry, and he felt she didn’t really want to touch him and couldn’t be bothered because we were the last clients of the day. It cost over £60, which was a joke. He was already feeling insecure and came away feeling worse. A masseuse should be comfortable massaging anyone. I plan to email about the experience, but couldn’t find a contact email.

We checked in around 3pm, spent some time in the room, then went down for dinner. We ordered chicken, fish and chips, fillet steak and sirloin steak, but none of the dishes were edible, so we felt we had no choice but to refuse to pay. The waiter and manager were polite and professional about it, which we appreciated. After that, we tried three separate times to order takeaway, and each time we were turned down. Frustrated, with no proper dinner option, we left around 7pm, only four hours after arriving. For a £250 stay at Hanbury Manor in Ware, the food and overall experience were a huge letdown for a hotel of this standard, even though the staff were kind.

We had a delicious meal on the first night, though it arrived lukewarm. There are two bars: one is a cocktail bar that also serves pints, while the other has more of a sports bar or pub feel and serves Guinness. It’s odd that Guinness isn’t available in the other bar, and we saw three other guests ask about it too. The hotel sits in a stunning location, with a golf course and country club, and the spa is a real gem. Staff were amazing. Our room was spacious, but when we opened the wardrobe it was falling apart, and the bathroom could use some redecoration. Small things like those are easy to fix. I’d visit again.

We had a pleasant stay and would come back. Ware is a great little town down the road, with lovely independent cafes, shops and restaurants, and the area works well for a few days away. The hotel grounds are nice for short walks, though I imagine the rose garden would be better in summer once the flowers have bloomed. The rooms were lovely, with an old-school manor house feel, and ours was heated just right, making it cosy. The pool and spa were clean, and the staff there were friendly and helpful. The gym was nice and the cardio room bright, though the downstairs weights room could use the same lighting. One small thing: downstairs hot drinks should come with a biscuit. Water was replenished in the room on the first night, but not the second.

1. I used it 2. For such a premium price tag, Hanbury Manor’s cleanliness is shockingly poor; we were deeply disappointed with the messy and dirty environment. 3. What a letdown! The high cost did not match the experience at all, as the room was poorly cleaned with visible stains everywhere. 4. As a Marriott country club hotel, it charges a fortune but fails miserably at basic cleanliness. This was by far one of our worst stays ever. 5. Extremely dirty and overpriced: the corners of the room were full of dust, and we couldn’t believe we paid so much for such a shoddy experience. 6. Poor hygiene standards and exorbitant prices make Hanbury Manor a total no-go; there’s nothing about the stay that justifies the cost. 7. We expected a luxury manor experience, but instead got a dirty, messy room at a premium price. Complete disappointment from start to finish. 8. Way overpriced for the level of cleanliness provided; the hotel was unkempt and grimy, which ruined our entire stay. 9. The cleanliness here is absolutely appalling, especially considering how much we paid; we would never recommend this place to anyone. 10. Overpriced yet shockingly dirty, Hanbury Manor failed to deliver even the most basic standard of cleanliness, making it a terrible value for money.
