On our first visit, we had a large room on what I think was the second or maybe third floor, up a few steps, with a sea view. It could use updating. There was a safe taking up space where a chest of drawers might fit, and the little TV in the corner felt miles away. The bed was comfortable, with spare pillows in the wardrobe, and there was plenty of tea, coffee and lovely biscuits. We could hear the people upstairs walking around. There are two bars downstairs, one busy and one quieter when we went near closing, though we had to get drinks from the bigger bar. Breakfast was self-serve, with plenty of food as it wasn't busy. They have two car parks, charged at what I think was £6 for our one night. One is mostly reserved spaces, and the other is a dirt lot with no marked bays, where you just find a place. There aren't enough spaces for a hotel this size, so I'd try to reserve one, though there aren't many. We came back for another night a couple of weeks later. This time our standard double had a surprisingly large, comfy bed. The bedding looked creased in the photo because I only took it as we were leaving, not when we arrived. The hotel sits on top of the cliff, with a good view. It was busier this time because a Rocky Horror Picture Show event was right next to our room. Luckily it had quietened down by bedtime, but anyone wanting an early, quiet night wouldn't have had much luck. During the day we could hear the neighbours talking, though not at night, when they were probably out. The room needed attention, and the street-facing window meant people passing could look in unless we closed the net curtains. I posted photos of the room and the things we noticed. We paid for breakfast again. The first time it had been fine, but this visit was busier and the cooked items ran out at the buffet, leaving people waiting. When fresh food finally came out, it soon ran out again. The chef needs to keep a closer eye on things instead of waiting until the food is gone before cooking more. We gave up and had yoghurt, fruit and Weetabix, which was disappointing when we'd paid for the cooked breakfast. Breakfast runs until 10.00am, but people still seemed to be waiting for food from earlier. After this visit, we don't think we'll return. The breakfast needs sorting out, and the rooms could use a fresh coat of paint and some decorating.

We had lunch in the bar, which at first seemed pricey, but when it arrived it was beautifully presented, with a fresh, tasty dressed salad, and was well worth it. The location is fantastic, close to everything, and breakfast was substantial with all we needed. They even made different eggs when asked. We'd booked through Wowcher for two couples. On arrival the scaffolding wasn't the best first impression, but the receptionist quickly made up for it with a warm, friendly and informative welcome. While our rooms weren't ready, we waited in the bar, which had lovely decor and friendly staff. One room was a bit tired but very clean, while the other was lovely. The ground-floor rooms had spectacular Abbey views. Parking is £6 per night, paid at checkout. It's a small car park on a slope, as are most things in Whitby. The Wowcher included Prosecco on arrival, served in an ice bucket with two wine flutes, a lovely touch. We'd definitely stay again, even without a Wowcher.

The breakfast was tasty and good quality, though some people might not have found it enough. I think they were short staffed. We had booked a sea-view room and were upgraded to a four-poster room, which had been done up really nicely and still had a lovely sea view. There was scaffolding outside while work was going on, which was fine. After the renovations, this was a better stay than our last one. We'd come back, and it's dog friendly.

We had a great room in a perfect spot, within walking distance of the beach and Whitby harbour. There's a gorgeous sunset view from just outside the hotel. All the staff were lovely and made us and our baby feel welcome, so we ended up extending our stay by a night. The hotel bar and restaurant were great too. We got the last parking space in the unreserved area, but I believe you can reserve a spot, which I'd recommend if you're visiting at a busy time.

I got home feeling relaxed and full of energy after a week ago's trip with a tour group. The Royal is well placed for taking in the wonderful views, and the food was great. Whitby and the surrounding countryside are lovely, though the hills could be difficult if you have mobility issues. Sitting on the cliff top to enjoy the scenery is a good option. There's a yellow tour bus right outside, and I used local buses to visit Scarborough and Robin Hoods Bay, which brought back memories of childhood holidays. The staff were friendly, helpful and professional at every level, and they handled the large group brilliantly. The catering manager kept everything calm and under control. Andrew, the overall manager, pitched in with the team, clearing breakfast tables and helping at reception. I think staff respect a manager who does that, and it showed. Five stars to everyone. Well done.
