Cathy was polite, professional, and apologetic when she heard about the first room. She found us a much cleaner one, though I suspect she had to make a few adjustments first. The replacement was tidy, with spotless bedding, plenty of tea, coffee and milk, and reception could provide more. The bathroom had wrapped plastic cups and facial tissues, which you don't always get in higher-rated hotels. Parking was a minute's walk away because the route from the car park was pedestrianised. The first room, though, was appalling: mould on the ceilings, a ripped chair, a generally shabby feel, a filthy TV remote, hairs in the plughole, a dirty bathroom floor, and even a peanut under the bedside unit. As we were leaving, we saw someone who appeared to be a cleaner washing cups and spoons in a room with a towel. We expect crockery to go through a dishwasher, so I'd recommend bringing your own cups. Three stars overall.

The friendly welcome and the location suited our needs, but the stay was poor. The rooms felt tired, the decor badly needed updating, and the shower thermostat didn't work properly. Every time we used a tap or the toilet, pipes made a grinding noise that kept us awake for hours. When we went to reception to report it, nobody was there.

The rooms were okay, though they smelled strongly of detergent. There were no spare blankets, and the tea cups were tiny; the Ted Yorkshire teabags tasted disgusting. Also, the advert gave the wrong impression about breakfast. There isn't breakfast included with this booking. Instead, you can buy a £10 voucher for £7.50 to spend at McDonald's or Costa. That feels like a scam.

We felt relaxed and happy here, especially since we hadn't known what to expect. The grounds were lovely for people watching, the location worked well, and our bed was comfortable. We stayed two nights in August for a trip to Hever Castle, and the staff were so friendly and helpful, a real credit to the company. We'd definitely stay again. Fiona & Lee x
