Hack and Spade

The owner was so friendly and helpful, and you can tell she really cares about her guests. Our bedroom was clean, comfortable and beautiful. Breakfast was fabulous, served in a lovely dining room with all sorts of interesting things on the walls. Hopefully we’ll stay here again when we’re next nearby.

We had dinner there, and it was delicious. The owner is a local woman who also cooks, and the place feels really homely and cosy. There are only four rooms, so it’s quiet and peaceful, and the staff are friendly. A wonderful spot to stay in the Yorkshire Dales. Highly recommend!

The host was extremely friendly, and the surroundings were quiet and calm. The Zetland was a beautiful, exquisitely furnished room, and it was spotlessly clean. Breakfast set us up for the day. Definitely somewhere to stay.

We’d booked three rooms at The Hack & Spade ten months ahead for one night, for guests coming to a family birthday party. Then, just two weeks before the Bank Holiday weekend event, the hotel told me there’d been a mix-up: they’d accepted a two-night booking for the whole place, so we were down to one room instead of three. They wouldn’t cancel that booking, which clearly brought in more money. The owners did try to find somewhere else for us, and that’s part of why I’ve given one star. The system doesn’t let me give no stars. It may be a genuine mistake, or cynical behaviour by The Hack & Spade. I’ll leave others to speculate, though I have my own opinion. Either way, it’s unacceptable, and for that reason I wouldn’t recommend the place. I’m sure it’s probably really nice otherwise.
