The staff were polite and helpful, and the parking was really convenient, especially compared with central Whitby. The food, though, was a letdown for the prices. I went for the Whitby Scampi (£14.79), which was overcooked and mostly batter, with barely a tablespoon of mushy peas. The “triple cooked” chips seemed like ordinary frozen ones reheated a few times. My partner’s 10oz Bacon Chop (£18.99) was tough, the mushrooms were overdone, and their chips were just as poor. The fried egg was the one good part. We’d come in wanting a good gammon steak, but for nearly £50 for two with soft drinks, the meal felt low-end. We won’t be back.

We always have a wonderful stay at The Penny Hedge. The staff are friendly, helpful and know the area and things to do really well. They’re accommodating with guests of all ages. Can’t recommend them enough!

We’ve had two great meals here. The mixed grill and steaks were delicious, and Phil was brilliant, knew the menu well, and agreed with us about how fab the baileys sundae is. The whole team are lovely and do everything they can for you. Families are made very welcome, there’s a great play area, and the kids’ menu is affordable with good options.

We come back here for good value whenever we visit Whitby. The rooms are clean and the beds comfortable. For a short stay, we like being able to skip room cleaning to save the busy staff some time, and it’s handy that we can ask for extra tea, coffee and milk. There’s a good choice of food and drinks at the bar.

We stay here regularly because it’s such a friendly, professional team. The room was superb, housekeeping excellent, and the staff sorted our cot request straight away.
