The one real positive is the location in Whitby's old part. The place needs a serious deep clean and refurb. Outside is scruffy, with dirty windows, peeling paint and a loose front-door handle. Indoors, the kitchen is the first thing you enter, and under the stairs there's a pile of mops, buckets, a hoover and other things that could easily be shut away in a cupboard. Some kitchen unit handles are missing, and the cutlery, plates and mugs are all mismatched. The cooker is filthy with grease and dirt inside and stinks of grease. The washing-up bowl smells of it too. A welcome pack would be useful. The steep spiral stairs are a nightmare to navigate, and the third step from the bottom slopes down. There are steep, uneven steps outside as well, making this unsuitable for people with mobility issues. The dirty, worn leather chairs should be taken to the tip. The wall pictures look like charity shop finds, and little effort seems to have gone into making the place look nice. The bathroom is disgusting: there was no toilet paper, the bath needs a deep clean, the sink is coming away from the wall, and there wasn't much hot water for a bath. I didn't feel clean after bathing, and there's a smear of poo on the wall by the toilet. There's a big crack in the living room wall. Skirting boards throughout are chipped, the walls are marked and dirty, and there are quite a lot of visible cobwebs. The painted stairs are chipped, there are dirty hand marks on the ledge at the top floor, and the light switches are dirty from fingers. In the single bedroom, the plaster is blowing, presumably from damp, and the paint is peeling. There's no mattress protector on the double bed or pillow protector on the single bed, and the single-bed pillow had a big greasy stain. The carpets look grubby. When we arrived, the fire alarm was repeatedly beeping to signal that its battery needed changing. It was a very bad experience and I wouldn't recommend anyone stay here. The owner should be ashamed of themselves.
