We were glad to see the bar busy when we arrived, as we'd like this place to succeed. We've been coming to The Kings Head on and off since the new owners arrived about a year ago, after knowing it in its glory days around ten years back and through various owners. The food had never blown us away, but we decided to try again. We chose the £19 pie dish, which sounded promising. The good thing was that the meat we could find tasted delicious. The problem was that about 75% of the pie was pastry and only 25% meat. The pastry was rock hard and, when we managed to cut into it, it exploded across the room. Maybe it had been sitting around and the meat had shrunk, but there was hardly any meat that night. We told the staff afterwards because we were disappointed. Another staff member came over and said that was simply how the chef made pies, and nothing anyone could do or say would make him do them differently. We were taken aback. It sounded as if we had no grounds to complain and the chef must be right. I'd like him to have tasted one of those pies that evening and confirmed he thought it was fine. Perhaps the meat to pastry ratio is usually better, but it really wasn't that night. It's a shame, because otherwise everything was good. We visited the restaurant, so can't comment on the rooms. KH, please take customers' constructive criticism seriously instead of treating the chef as automatically right. After this, we probably won't be back for quite some time.

The beef was beautifully cooked and we had a very nice Sunday lunch. My only concern was getting in and down to the toilets: there was no handrail by the steps. At 87, I had to ask someone to help me avoid a fall.

TriTeamWessex had its AGM followed by a social and skittles evening from 7-10pm. The £35pp package included starters, slides and dessert, a meal, skittles and one free drink per person. There was plenty of food for everyone, and the service and catering were excellent. Tahirul led a friendly, very helpful team who made the evening run smoothly. The atmosphere was superb. Thank you.

Our family stayed here before the renovation, and what they've done is incredible. We've eaten here several times recently, and the food has been excellent every time, reasonably priced for the quality. Sunday lunch is a particular highlight. Service is efficient, and Martin, the manager, couldn't be friendlier, more accommodating or more attentive. This pub/hotel is a gem for visitors and locals alike. Keep up the great work.

We'd been meaning to try this place for a while and dropped in for lunch today. The building and location are lovely, and it's a nice village pub with good beers and toilets. The waitresses and bar staff were pleasant, but slow to take our order, which took about 20 minutes. Food took another 45 to 50 minutes, despite the place not being especially busy. The menu is quite haute cuisine and not cheap, which would be fine if the food justified the extra cost compared with similar local pubs. I don't mind a longer wait on a Friday or Saturday night, but weekday lunch needs to be quicker. A nearby table celebrating a birthday seemed to have the same problem, and I felt sorry for them. I'd seen another review mention the delay too. Shame, as it's a lovely looking pub, but I wouldn't choose to return.
