A little gem in Barnstaple. The place was clean throughout, and the staff gave great service. It may be worth booking directly for some good offers, and perhaps a room upgrade if you’re lucky. I’d be tempted to try other hotels in the group.

The place was spotless, and the staff were really friendly. It’s in an ideal spot, and the pub down the road, the horse and groom, is definitely worth a visit. The drinks are very reasonably priced, and there are sports on. Parking can be tricky with a large vehicle or van because the car park has an odd shape, but there’s an overflow car park just down the lane.

The coffee and service were lovely, and the atmosphere was good. I’ve had sandwiches and Sunday roast here before, and both were great. But whoever plated my jacket potato should have paid more attention. There was barely a spoonful of filling and no butter. Maybe the price could go up a little so there’s enough filling to eat the whole potato. We didn’t want to send it back and were hungry, so we ate half of it dry, with the salad and chutney on top. I wish I’d taken a photo, as I’m worried this sounds exaggerated, but I didn’t think of it at the time.

Our room was a good size, clean, and had plenty of storage, plus a bath with a shower. When we had trouble with the heating, staff quickly brought us a small heater that worked well. We had a meal included, with a £25 per person allowance against the main menu. The hotel sits at the end of the high street, so the shops are an easy walk away. There’s ample parking, but it isn’t beside or behind the hotel. It’s a short walk along an alley that used to be a road, and access means negotiating a narrow lane. It would be useful if the hotel could provide access at the rear. There is a lift, though it doesn’t reach every floor, so some stairs are still unavoidable. Breakfast was mixed. The first morning’s full English was hot but the plate was very greasy. On the second morning, our poached eggs on toast were cold and overcooked, which wasn’t great. The cereal and pastries were fine. The large main bar area felt welcoming, and drink prices were what you’d expect at a hotel. The lunchtime bar menu seemed popular. Despite the hotel’s location, it was very quiet, and our room at the back may have helped. Yes, I’d happily stay again.

I’ve just booked my 93-year-old mother and my sister into the Royal & Fortescue, and I’m so jealous! They’ve been upgraded to a suite with wonderful views up the High Street. Mum has had a tough year health-wise, and she was thrilled when she saw her beautiful room. Thank you to The Royal & Fortescue. You’re a fantastic local business setting a great example for quality service.
