The estate looked lovely, but finding it was difficult and the stay felt disorganised. I never got the welcome pack by email, so I didn't know which room was mine. I'd paid extra for an en-suite and was put in a standard room instead. I couldn't reach anyone when I called, and in the morning I was told to find another room in the house myself. I did, only to discover the upstairs shower was leaking and about to burst through the wall above my bed. After I called again, the housekeeper moved me to another estate, where a party meant we couldn't use anything except our room. Maybe we were just unlucky, but it wasn't a good stay. The estate itself is lovely to look at.

The outside looks promising, but that's where the positives end. We came for an overnight stay for my birthday and had trouble finding the place because the signs were so poor. I wish we'd carried on driving. Inside, three unattended children were running around, shoving into us and knocking over our luggage. The only adult we could find to ask about our room was a topless man who didn't know where it was. When we finally found it, the ceiling and walls were damp, the sash window was covered in cobwebs and wouldn't close, and the roller blind was filthy. The shared bathroom was mouldy and clearly unclean. The children then spent nearly an hour kicking our door and trying to get in. We decided to leave and find somewhere else. If you're thinking of booking, don't put yourself through it. Stay elsewhere and avoid this hotel.

The garden and its stunning views were a highlight, and the rural setting was lovely and peaceful. Inside, the rooms were spacious, clean and had very comfortable beds. There was a good common room and good facilities, but nobody told us about the room, so our first night was pretty boring, lol. There was no TV and no power socket in the bedrooms. Lamps had been put beside each bed with nowhere to plug them in. I know rewiring a listed building like this could cost a lot, but even an extension lead would have helped. The shared bathroom was small, and although Wi-Fi was available, the signal was very weak.

My wife and I stayed for about 30 minutes before deciding to book somewhere else. The sheets weren't clean, the walls were dirty, a pane of outside window glass was broken, and there were no sockets to charge our phones. Nothing else to add, really, except don't stay here. If the rating went below one star, it would deserve that. Zero out of five.

A unique place and surprisingly affordable. We had a very pleasant five days pretending to be lord and lady of the manor, with lovely countryside views, comfortable rooms and a fully equipped country kitchen. It's very much self-service, and you'll need to put up with old electrics and plumbing and share with visiting tradies and other travellers.
