We came as nine for a family Sunday lunch, having booked our food ahead of time. I remember visiting this place in its heyday over 30 years ago, so it was sad to see how much it had changed. The car park was surprisingly empty at 1pm, and the welcome felt lukewarm and confused. Drinks took 10 minutes to be offered, then another 15 minutes to arrive, and some never did. Starters began coming out while we waited. We were told three preordered pork meals weren't available and that lamb could be served instead. There were no Yorkshire puddings, even though the place was nearly empty and we were among the first customers of the day. Service stayed slow and muddled, with no condiments or further drinks offered. The portions were small, and the food was edible, but not much more than that. We complained and ended up paying only for drinks, though we had asked for just a 50% reduction. We were told two chefs had called in sick. That's unfortunate, but they should have lowered expectations when we arrived or cancelled the sitting if they couldn't provide the meal properly. I hope this was a one-off, but there were enough other issues to make me wonder if the chefs' absence was the only problem.

The staff made the stay feel warm and relaxed. Everyone was welcoming, attentive, and ready to help, and the hotel is in a lovely area with a charming atmosphere that made it easy to feel comfortable. I especially enjoyed the food. Breakfast had plenty of delicious choices, all nicely prepared, and the evening meal was just as good, full of flavour and beautifully presented. Eating there was a pleasure each day. I had a very, very good stay at the King’s Arms Hotel and would happily come back. Auf ein wiedersehen . Robert & Ute

The roast lamb was really tasty, and I finished with chocolate cheesecake and a big pot of tea. We went for Sunday lunch after hearing through the grapevine that the owners of The Neeld had taken over, and wanted to show our support. It’s a pleasant restaurant, with a decent car park, a lovely garden, and a welcoming team. Service stayed cheerful and friendly throughout. Looking forward to seeing the pub go from strength to strength under the new owners. We’ll be back soon!

The breakfast was an hour late, poor quality, and the orders were wrong. My parents also heard staff complaining about work that morning and saying the chef wasn't there, so they'd need to find someone to cover breakfast. I booked this as a surprise night away for my parents because the modern rooms and horse pictures appealed to me. Instead, they were put in an incredibly outdated room. The website only showed photos of modern rooms, and I wouldn't have paid such a high fee if I'd known they'd get this one. There was also a huge party that went on until 12.30pm, so they couldn't sleep. It's a shambles, and I'll be requesting a refund.

The atmosphere was lovely, and the new owners were friendly and hands-on. The staff were extremely helpful and welcoming, and this is probably one of the most dog-friendly pubs we've ever stayed at. The food and beer selection were excellent and good value. The Kings Arms is everything a British pub should be!
