We’re already checking the diary to work out when we can come back. The pub was absolutely cracking, and both breakfast and dinner were exceptional. Our room was spacious, simply decorated and lovely, with plenty of tea and coffee and a generous bathroom. It’s well placed for Southwold, Beccles and the nearby villages, and good value too. Stunning stay.

That’s a shame. We used to look forward to Sunday lunch here when we visited the area, but the 5 Bells seems to have gone downhill. The vegetarian nut roast was basically a ball of rice with a few seeds and a couple of cranberries. I couldn’t find a single nut in it. The vegetable side wasn’t much better, though the Yorkshire pudding was good. A decent nut roast is already hard to find, so this was especially disappointing.

The service was really friendly and the place had a relaxed feel. We had the pork belly Sunday roast and tomato and spinach soup, both delicious, with generous portions. The fish and chips looked great too. There’s a fireplace as well, if you’re lucky enough to get a seat beside it.

Millie, our Pomeranian, was made just as welcome as we were. The accommodation was comfortable and clean, and the surroundings were lovely. The service was excellent, and compliments to the chef for the great food. We’d definitely stay again and would recommend it.

Our group of eight relatives meets at the 5 Bells regularly for a meal and a get-together. Yesterday’s set Christmas menu was the best pub or restaurant Christmas meal I’ve ever had, and we all agreed. The turkey was tender and moist, everything was cooked just right and beautifully presented, and the Christmas pudding was wonderful. The food is always great here. We’ll be back in February, and we can’t wait for next Christmas.
