The Hand

The bed was clean and comfortable, and the bar downstairs was quite nice, with friendly staff and fairly priced drinks. We didn’t eat there, as we went to the nice curry place opposite. But I couldn’t recommend our last-minute triple room, which we booked as a couple. The room felt dated and due for renovation, though I could have accepted that if it had been in decent shape. The shower was grimy, and the old plastic made it look worse. We were in room 5, and I think the room next door was 3. There seemed to be some sort of boiler against the shared wall: every half hour or so, a loud hum would start, loud enough to keep us awake, and the wall got really warm. We had to sleep with the window open to cool the room, which meant listening to road traffic. We paid for the inexpensive breakfast and didn’t expect much, but it needs real improvement. It took 35 minutes to arrive. The fry-up looked good, but most of it was cold. The fried eggs had cold, runny whites, the toast had gone rock hard and cold from being made first, while the hash browns and mushrooms were piping hot. The sausage was the worst part. I cut into it and it smelled rotten, so we left quite a lot of the meal. We tried to mention it in the morning, but only a young lad was there, and I didn’t want to keep going on at him. Hopefully he passed it on.
