Breakfast at the adjoining "Bait Box" was a highlight. The bacon and the panini with cranberry and brie were delicious. During our stay the hotel's kitchen was being refurbished, but the bar man made sure we still had meal options and let us bring food in to eat in our room or at the bar. The room was cosy and a bit small for us, as the other rooms were occupied and the bar man hadn't realised how big our dogs were. He apologised sincerely. The bed and pillows were very comfortable, and we slept well. Tea-making facilities and a TV were provided. There wasn't much room around the toilet, but it didn't bother us. The warm welcome and service made our stay at The Black Bull Inn memorable. The man at the front desk and behind the bar was friendly, made check-in easy, and showed us to our room himself. Any small drawbacks in the room were outweighed by the friendly atmosphere and thoughtful service. We'd definitely recommend staying here, especially if you're looking for somewhere cosy and welcoming.

There were only two people working in the whole place, and they seemed not to care. Nobody checked whether the meal was all right or came to ask if we wanted more drinks or dessert. The waitress looked miserable, and the food was lukewarm and very average. The vegetables were all on the plate together, and the gravy was the worst I've had. It used to be packed at lunchtime, but today it was so empty it felt like tumbleweed. The place has recently changed hands after 25 years, which makes the disappointing food and service especially sad. I've worked in catering and know a good lunch service is hard, but please bring back hot plates, steaming bowls of veg, and good beef gravy.

After a lovely walk along the river from Wylam, we stopped for Sunday lunch and it was brilliant. There was more than enough food even for a big appetite. The staff were hospitable and welcoming, and the service was excellent. It was lovely to be served by people with a pleasant manner and a real smile. We'll definitely return, and I'd highly recommend the place. Five plus stars.

Really friendly staff, good beer, and cracking chips.

We got a very friendly welcome, even as awkward southerners. The fish and chips were superb, and there were two good ales along with Aspall cider. Highly recommend.
