The George

The response to my complaint left me feeling The George fell far short of the standards it promotes. Staff acknowledged speaking to the guests who caused the noise, but there was little recognition of how it affected our special celebration. I was told there had been no other complaints that weekend and offered 10% off a future stay, with advice to return between October and March for a quieter experience. After spending a significant amount on what should have been memorable, I couldn't understand why the answer seemed to be spending more and coming back at another time. A tenth anniversary can't simply be recreated. My wife and I chose The George for our tenth wedding anniversary, returning to the Isle of Wight where we'd honeymooned. We hoped for a relaxing, memorable stay, but over two nights we were repeatedly woken by people in neighbouring rooms coming back late, shouting, screaming, laughing loudly, and slamming doors. We raised it the first night, then followed up by phone and in person with reception, but it continued. I eventually felt I had to speak to the guests myself. Neither of us got any meaningful sleep. There were also repeated problems with drinks orders, which were forgotten, delayed, incomplete, or wrong. Each might have been minor alone, but together the service was well below what we expected. Sadly, both the stay and the way our concerns were handled were deeply disappointing.

We had an amazing stay at the George last week. The food was some of the best we've ever had, and the rooms were beautiful, super clean, serviced, and had amazing amenities. From check-in, Tracy on reception couldn't do enough to help, and every other staff member we met was fantastic too, though I can't remember all their names. Five star standards. Thanks to everyone at the George!

I felt completely welcome at The Conservatory restaurant and was comfortable dining on my own. The moules mariniere with fries and the lychee martini were the best I'd had in a very long time. I went midweek without booking and didn't need one, as there was only 1 couple in the restaurant. The sea and pier view was fantastic, and it's right next to Yarmouth Castle. I walked from where I was staying locally, but street parking is free after 6pm. There's also a very large car park a short walk from the town and restaurant, open 24/7 with pay and display or payment by app. I'd certainly dine there again on my next visit. Thank you.

The setting is lovely, but the service may have been the worst I've ever had, and the food wasn't good either. We waited over half an hour for our first drinks, then had to ask where they were before they finally arrived. Starters came after 20 odd minutes, which was fine, and were ok. More than half an hour after the starters were cleared, the mains arrived. One steak ordered medium rare came well done, and the chips and two steaks were cold. They took away the chips and cold steaks, leaving us to eat the other steak without chips. Twenty minutes later, new chips and a replacement steak came back, by which point everyone else had finished. Otherwise all our food would have been cold. Our second drinks round took over 30 minutes too, and again we had to ask about it. Then the bar staff were high fiving each other as if they'd done an excellent job. Lots of tables were complaining. I emailed the George instead of posting a review, but they couldn't even be bothered to reply. Shocking.
