Guy Fawkes Inn

I was very disappointed with the whole meal. Mum couldn’t eat hers because the chips were hard and dry, and the fish we ordered as haddock clearly wasn’t haddock. The online Sunday lunch menu listed pork loin, while the menu in the restaurant said pork belly. Yet the bill charged us for pork loin. When I raised these issues, the restaurant dismissed my concerns and offered neither a discount nor a partial refund.

The food was out of this world, and all of us had a great weekend here for a friend’s birthday. We’re a group aged from our 30s to our 50s, and the lively atmosphere suited us perfectly. It’s a famous, very old inn right in the middle of everything, with people outside and a bar and food going late, so it isn’t somewhere to choose if you want peace and quiet. The rooms are quirky and very nice, and while the place might seem pricey, it felt worth every penny. Ben checked us in, gave us all the information we needed, and was always smiling and ready to help. The other staff were fantastic too, professional, helpful, and seemingly genuinely happy to talk to guests. Fabulous for staying, eating, and drinking. I’d recommend it 1000%.

That Guy Fawkes steak and ale pie is the best pie I’ve ever had. The filling had slow-cooked steak so tender it melted in my mouth, with a rich, flavour-packed ale gravy that didn’t feel greasy or heavy. The pastry was golden and crisp, with just the right bite. It all tasted properly homemade, like care had gone into it instead of rushing it or mass-producing it. If you’re thinking about ordering it, do. I can’t imagine finding a better one.

The attic room gave us a bit of a creepy feeling in the living room and bedroom, which was part of the fun. The bed was very comfortable, and the stay was clean too. We tried the chicken and beef burgers, which were lovely, and I’d heard so much about the pie that I gave it a go despite not usually liking pie. I’d happily order it again. Great location, and the bathroom was designed really nicely. Thanks for a spooky but comfortable night!
