The Fat Badger

We only stopped in for lunch, and the food was delicious. I’d definitely recommend The Badger Beef Burger. My only gripe was the option to add 2.5% to the bill towards maintaining their Grade II listed building. The company chose the building for its location and appeal, so I think its prices should cover all the costs and charges. That was the only downer, but do check the online bill before paying.

Lovely, friendly and clean, with comfortable beds. But with mobility issues like ours, it wasn’t an ideal place to stay. There are 60 steps up a narrow, steep staircase to the top floor, and no lift because there’s no room for one.

The location was perfect, with lovely shops and pubs nearby, and an easy walk from the train station. From our room, the secret garden looked lovely. I’m a very light sleeper, but the terrace noise didn’t bother me at all, and I could barely hear the merriment. The bed was so comfy that I slept well and woke refreshed. A lovely inn and a perfect first stop after an overnight flight and a quick train ride from the US.

The hotel looks intriguing, and the staff were friendly and efficient. I hadn’t found this little rabbit warren on earlier visits to York. It was an ideal spot to take my work colleague from the South West on the eve of a tough job the next day. We only managed three rounds, sadly, but it started a memorable evening.
