What an extraordinary place. Just amazing.

A place to relax.

The thought of returning is still on my mind. We saw plenty during our trip, but nothing left an impression like this house, and those feelings haven’t faded yet. At Guest House Chinti 444 in Chinti, our host Nugo first led us into the courtyard. Then we heard music from farther inside, and I had the strange feeling we’d arrived somewhere else. He showed us a three-level summer veranda for travelers. There was a small tree room on the second level, like something out of a fairy tale, and the top level offered a quiet spot for anyone wanting to be alone. We settled into chairs downstairs while a friend sat on a couch among the branches. The Caucasus Mountains came into view, with the Aragvi roaring below us. The music kept playing, and we all fell quiet. The fresh air and that sound were the only things to break the stillness. Nugo later brought us out of our daze and talked about his ideas and plans. He said we were somewhere in a trance, then invited us inside. There was a huge balcony, broad stone steps and old railings, but crossing the threshold was what stopped me in my tracks. The place brought to mind the Vatican, Rome, Versailles and the Louvre. It felt more like a museum than a home. If you’ve ever wondered how Sumerians, aliens, Georgian themes, space and China could fit together, this house might help make sense of it. We’d come from near Tbilisi, in the village of Chinti by the Zhinvali reservoir, but the moment felt like entering a mystical world.
