The housekeeping was easily the worst part of the trip. They cleaned our rooms for the first two days, then stopped. We’d see them on our floor when heading to breakfast and still find them there after a full day out, but our room hadn’t been touched. One evening around 8pm, a housekeeper knocked to ask if I wanted it cleaned, then told me how tired and stressed she was. I wondered how, since nobody in our group had had their room cleaned. Coming back to an untidy room after being out all day was disappointing. By contrast, when the air conditioning quit and when our toilet wouldn’t flush, someone came up to fix each problem right away. I wish housekeeping got that same response. The front desk and concierge staff were always kind, polite, and helpful. They suggested activities and places to eat, and called taxis or Bolt for us. The location is good, next to Palace Mall, where we could easily get things we’d forgotten to pack. It’s within walking distance, has several restaurants that take credit cards, and there’s a currency exchange outside. There’s also Jam Rock connected to the hotel, with live music and a nice vibe. The service there was so-so, but the restaurant was pretty good. Breakfast was included as a buffet each day, with an omelet station. There was a mix of foods, mostly local breakfast dishes, fruit, and bread. Sometimes it felt more like brunch. It was typical without being typical, if that makes sense. The rooms were small but efficient, and differed a bit, especially in the bathrooms. Some had showers, others had tubs with showers. The tubs were so high it felt like an Olympic jump to get in. I was glad to have a shower since I’m short and didn’t want getting clean to turn into a workout. There’s an elevator, and even though it’s tiny, having one that works felt like a blessing after places in Africa without elevators. My shower leaked badly enough that we used more towels on the floor than on ourselves. It only leaked while running, but the leak was significant. We reported it, and nothing happened. The room was small but decent, with a good firm mattress that helped my bad back, though my young son didn’t like it. There was air conditioning and hot, strong water. Laundry and ironing services are available. You can also ask for an iron and ironing board without paying for clothes to be pressed. Laundry for eight days of clothes for three people cost us $265. I heard it’s disrespectful to send underwear to be washed, though it’s listed on the sheet. If they don’t want to clean it, it shouldn’t be offered as an option.
