Matoula

We found the food at the village and beach restaurants excellent, and I’m particularly fussy about restaurant food. The apartment was clean and roomy, with a great pool and bar area and friendly, helpful staff. It was nice to spend evenings at the bar. The location works well, about five minutes on foot to the main village or the beach, and the main supermarket is at the end of the road in the village. We stayed last year and would highly recommend it. We’re returning to Corfu for the third year in a row, and I’d choose to stay here over Spain any day. It’s worth having a car for a few days to see some of the beautiful beaches along the east coast. If you’re feeling brave, drive up Corfu’s highest mountain. Corfu Town is worth exploring too, especially the Fort, an incredible piece of history, and the picturesque, unspoilt historic town.

We really enjoyed our week at the matoula appointments and only wish we’d booked two weeks. We intend to visit again soon. The place felt like coming home, thanks to all the wonderful staff at reception, cleaning, and especially Andreas, the bar manager. Our apartment was immaculately clean and well presented. The pool is a nice size and the sunbeds are free, with a €1 charge for the day for a cushion cover. At the pool bar, Andreas and his chief serve a good range of beer, spirits, soft drinks, tea, and coffee, as well as breakfast and dinner until 5pm. Turn left at the main gate for a short walk to the beach and several restaurants. Try the mezze, it’s very filling and a proper taste of Greek foods, and the sunsets make an evening meal there especially lovely. Turn right for a short walk to the main road, passing olive wood souvenirs and a nice restaurant on the way. The main strip has plenty of shops, restaurants, pharmacies, souvenir shops, clothing stores, and supermarkets.

WARNING, DO NOT BOOK. We stayed here around 12-13 times over the years and everything had been fantastic. But the hotel has been closed since autumn 2019, and the owner is still taking deposits without refunding them. We’re still owed hundreds of pounds and have had no reply to our emails or calls. Several staff members and locals told us she has no intention of reopening.

The staff were friendly and helpful, and the apartment was very clean and well appointed. It’s close to a great beach and town, with restaurants nearby. It also felt very safe for children. We’re quite sure we’ll return.
