Getting down to the beach is easy, and the cove looks lovely from the rooms' shared balcony. The rooms themselves are nice. Dinner is a buffet and just adequate, so I’d spend a few euros on something from the à la carte menu to make it better. Breakfast is served a short walk away at a café beautifully set at the inlet’s head. If dinner were served there too, this would be five stars. They only offer half board, perhaps a holdover from when there were few other places nearby. There are a handful around now.

Think twice before booking. My room was in the Kavos Melissa suites, about 1 km uphill from the hotel, despite the hotel's beachside pitch. There’s no shuttle, so getting there means a 12-minute walk along winding roads without sidewalks in summer heat. The suites are isolated, with no pool or bar, and every outing means walking back down and up again. The whole area is remote too, and without a car you can’t reach another beach or town. One of my worst holiday experiences.

We hadn't planned to stay here, but during our Crete road trip we were lucky to find a room for a couple of nights. Being able to step straight onto such a beautiful beach, with that view, felt priceless. It's quite isolated, though there's a welcoming taverna where you can eat. A little gem of a place.

The kids had a great time at the playground, and we enjoyed fresh seafood at the tavern. We stayed four nights at the hotel's Melissa apartments with family and friends. The rooms were clean and the service was great. Thanks to Vangelis and crew for making it such a good stay!

The view is beautiful and the air is fresh, but those steep, uneven steps to the rooms are a real challenge. I was amazed watching Yannis carry two full-size suitcases up and down them so easily during our stay. Also, that was my first time seeing a “kitchen” in the bathroom.
