Batselas Classic Hotel

A lovely hotel for a town of this size.

A solid choice.

The rooms and breakfast were mediocre, but the price issue was what really upset us. They asked for twice the amount we had discussed by phone, saying we must have misunderstood or misheard. They gave us no receipt, and when we asked for one, they wanted us to pay extra tax as well. We refused to pay that extra tax and had to make a fuss. What a shame. We won't be going back, not even setting foot inside. I'm not the only one mentioning the price, either. Other people have written about it too. Coincidence? I don't think so. Two of us can't both have misheard the nightly rate on the phone! Completely unacceptable and unprofessional. They can say they've been doing this for 20 years, but they seem unrelated to the profession.

The owner, probably, was incredibly rude and ignorant, repeatedly asking how many people were in the rooms and whether we'd handed in the keys. The room itself was disgusting: the broken water tank ran all night, and we had to keep pouring water from the shower. The doors wouldn't lock, or even close, so we had to sleep with them open. Air conditioning was only available in some rooms. I wouldn't pay to stay there again, even if they offered it for free.
