Pension Gerania

We found this guesthouse at the last minute and thought it was good value. The view from the room's veranda was amazing, and parking right by the building was very convenient. The older owners and caretakers were welcoming, though they speak only a little English, mostly the woman. The bathroom was clean, but both it and the shower area were quite small. We were a little surprised and disappointed to get two single beds instead of a king, though for a short last-minute stay it wasn't a big problem. I'd recommend it :)

The balcony, lovely view, and peaceful feel were enough to make us add a second night after our original one-night booking. The room was simple, clean, and had working air conditioning. Getting there meant climbing about 15 stairs from the parking lot; the owners are elderly, so they couldn't help with luggage. That's common for apartments in Asos, though some can be reached without stairs. The shower was tiny, so I pulled the curtain aside to keep it from brushing against me. There were two single beds rather than one double.

On our second night of four, the air conditioner stopped blowing cold air. We switched it off and opened the doors, which was pleasant but let in mosquitos. It worked again the next morning, and I mentioned the problem to our host. He said the unit was fine and we must have changed a setting, though we hadn't touched it. On the third night it failed again. The next morning my girlfriend got a small but steady shock from the shower water and bathroom sink. I told the cleaning staff, and the owner called an electrician. He said it was a municipal power problem, which was also leaving the air conditioner underpowered. The guest house is in a quiet spot on a walkway above Assos town square, away from the bustle. The owner welcomed us with orange juice, though he didn't speak English, and I'm not sure whether anyone there speaks English, Italian, or another language. Our basic room, number 3, was clean and had a balcony looking over the harbor. We were on a lower floor, so the view upstairs may be a little better. There was good air conditioning when it worked, a medium-sized fridge, and a hot water kettle. The bathrooms seemed recently updated. The water isn't potable, as across the island. Breakfast costs a small extra amount. Wi-Fi was free, and free parking was close by, down a steep road.

Check-in went smoothly, and after that my friend and I went to the beach and met some friends. They came to our room for about 15 minutes while we showered. When we came out, the owners were very aggressive about them having been there. I tried to reason with them and gently said I felt they were being rude. Both lost their tempers. The husband demanded my passport and said we had to leave. I've never had anything like that happen. Since it was high season, we ended up having to sleep in our car. It left us feeling very let down and unsafe, and that's why I'm leaving this review despite never having written a negative one before.
