Antica Canea Luxury Rooms

The harbor is just around the corner, and the location is fantastic. The accommodation was lovely, clean, and comfortable for a short stay. Having a couple of parking spaces was a real bonus.

We had a great three-night stay. The place was very clean, and you could tell the hosts had put real time and effort into how it was presented. They were helpful whenever we needed something extra or wanted suggestions. The pool area and upstairs balcony were lovely little extras.

We left Antica Canea Luxury Rooms feeling frightened and deeply upset. We had come hoping for a convenient stay, but ended up leaving because of what we believed was a health risk and a confrontation with the owner. At first, the host was pleasant and quick to respond, the central location was handy, and the room looked clean. But it was smaller than advertised and had a persistent damp smell. The owner suggested it could be from previous guests showering late. Running the AC on dry mode didn’t clear it. We then found substantial black mold behind the bed, which seemed to explain the smell, and decided to leave because we were worried about our health. There was also a sign in the room explaining why guests should leave only perfect reviews, which made us feel the owner cared more about ratings. When we asked for help getting to a locker box before leaving, the owner arrived with a woman, presumably his wife, and was visibly angry. He said we were ruining him by reporting the problem to our booking agency and worried about his booking.com rating, even though the situation was out of our control. Earlier, he had suggested giving us a cash refund if we avoided contacting the agency and pretended we had never checked in. That felt suspicious and against the guidelines. The encounter escalated. The owner pushed and verbally abused us, tried to stop us leaving, and threatened to come after us in our home country, which is also his, if we made the experience public. He said he knew people at the local police who would harm us if he wanted them to. We felt threatened and blackmailed, and feared for our safety and lives. We managed to get away without major physical harm, then left the city and moved to another part of the island because we took the threats seriously. The central location and the host’s initial responsiveness may seem appealing, but our experience was that the owner put maintaining a perfect rating ahead of guests’ wellbeing and safety. Never again. This account is based on our personal experience of the stay.

Everything is close enough to walk to, with restaurants, bars, and coffee shops only a few meters away. The area still stays quiet. I also stumbled across a great local market a few hundred meters from the hotel, with olives, cheese, and plenty more. The owner is so friendly that it feels a bit like visiting family. The rooms are clean and very nice, the AC works well, and the small cooled pool is perfect for a refreshing dip when it’s hot. Awesome hotel, 10/10, I’d come again.
