We had a really fun Wednesday evening at Kokalas Resort in Georgioupoli, where they put on a local barbecue with salad and traditional Greek and Cretan music. After dinner they showed us some local dances, which made the night even better. You need to book ahead for that meal, and I’d recommend doing it. The family running the resort made us feel like proper guests. We arrived late, but the owner was still there to greet us, with homemade cake and rakomelo, a local raki with honey. Our room was clean, and the staff cleaned the floor every day and changed the towels every other day. If you need anything, reception is happy to help. Just bear in mind that air conditioning costs extra. The cocktails there were also really good.

Thursday’s barbecue at this family-run hotel and restaurant turned into a proper celebration, with food, wine, music, and dancing. It felt like an authentic Cretan evening, and we won’t forget it. We were staying at the villa next door, which is owned by the same family, and their hospitality was one of the best parts of our trip. They made us feel at home, and we got to try lots of homemade local food. The cheeses, especially the feta, were delicious, the meat was just right, and the local wines went beautifully with the meal. If you’re nearby, it’s a lovely place to eat, stay, or just experience some local warmth.

Thursday’s grill night was SO MUCH FUN. We ate, danced, and I got to see my brother dance on fireee. It wasn’t dangerous! The drinks and service were great too. The rooms looked nice and were clean, with beautifully made beds and lots of free goodies. Breakfast was delicious, though I wish it were served buffet style. The people were so welcoming and sweet, and I think it’s a family-run hotel. 🦵🫁 🥢👁️

A great base for seeing as much of Crete as possible, with a beautiful beach and plenty of things to visit nearby. The location worked really well, and the rooms were clean with comfortable beds. Nikos and his family were friendly and treated us like one of their own.

The best part of Kokalas was how easy it was to get around. The bus stop for Rethymnon and Chania is only a minute away, and there are beaches and cafes nearby. Rula also kindly booked a Chania restaurant for my daughter’s birthday. Our family of four was greeted with a choice of drink and some local Cretan cake. The traditional rooms have wooden furnishings and were spotless, with hot water always available and air conditioning. The beds and pillows were so comfortable, and it was quiet at night. The medium-sized pool, baby pool, and plenty of sunbeds were all very clean. There’s a lovely bar with food and drinks, and a friendly face behind it. On Wednesdays they swap the sunbeds for tables and host a barbecue where families can meet. There’s good food, traditional Greek dancing, jumping over fire, and then more modern music. Such a fun night. We’ll be back. Thank you. Xx
