Rex Hotel

The people and service were nice, and it’s a pleasant hotel. I’d recommend it and would choose the Rex again on a future trip.

The breakfast was nice, the staff were polite and ready to help, and the location is excellent for exploring the city. But on our second visit, we were disappointed by the room. It, the curtains, and the air conditioner all smelled strongly of smoke. When we asked to move to a nonsmoking room, we were surprised to hear that all rooms accommodate smokers. That’s crazy in 2024! The hotel is advertised as four-star, but the rooms, bathrooms, beds, and furniture are so old that two stars would be the most I’d give them. The 3- or 4-star rating doesn’t fit unless there’s a major renovation. In the days before, we’d stayed at a two-star hotel with a luxury bath and a fireplace in the room.

Only the price, location, and staff were good. The hotel is 125 years old, and the beds feel just as old, hard as rocks. If sleeping on cardboard sounds fine, this place is for you. Otherwise, go somewhere else. The room smelled of bleach, the walls were paper thin, and the doors and beds creaked. The elevator was slow, there was dust under the bed, the hallways were pitch dark, and the stay was poor overall.

We got stuck on the road on our way back to Athens in August and urgently needed a hotel, so we found a room at the Rex for one night. It was clean and had a nice feel, with old-fashioned high ceilings, a marble staircase, and a large lift. The room was a good size, though my pillow was lumpy. We had a decent breakfast outside on the paved side area, and there was no evening noise on Friday.
