Barbara welcomed us warmly at reception, and the breakfast team were excellent. There was a good choice at breakfast, too. Our upgraded room had a balcony looking over the sandstone monoliths and gardens. The hotel is quiet, set back from the road and town noise, with good restaurants a five minute walk away. There are more options closer to the town square and church. A large hotel is being built next door. It’s an eyesore, and I understand the owner of this hotel is expanding, but the construction doesn’t block the east-facing view. The room lost a mark because the shower leaked and flooded the bathroom floor. I fixed it by hand-tightening a pipe fitting. The decor is dated, though it adds to the old-world charm. The location, amenities, comfort, style and views were why I chose this hotel, and the construction site alone shouldn’t put you off.

I loved the warm, relaxed feel here, and would happily stay a few more days. The staff at reception went out of their way to help: they called the bus station to reserve my ticket, arranged taxis and even took photos for me. Breakfast was freshly prepared and amazing. They cleared my used plates while I was away getting more food. The service felt warmer than at many five-star hotels I’ve stayed in, without being cold or formal. My room was very clean, and from the balcony I could see the rock formations and the town. I could even enjoy the view from bed. The service and breakfast went well beyond what I’d expect from a three-star hotel. I think the hotel may be rated three stars because it’s small and doesn’t have facilities such as a pool.

We wished we could have stayed longer at Hotel Doupiani after our overnight tour. The rooms had breathtaking panoramic views, and the hotel really does have some of the best around. Breakfast was fresh, homemade and local, and the staff were responsive and professional. Kastraki city center was about a 15 minutes' walk away. I'd definitely recommend it.

The rooms are old and dark, with only a very dim light in the bathroom. There's no elevator. Half the bedrooms face work from the hotel's expansion right in front of them. Unbelievable that they've spoiled their own view. What a shame!

A car crash left us without a vehicle after it was towed, so we couldn't make the stay we'd booked for today. I contacted the hotel and they cancelled without charging us. In an already stressful day, with the accident and repair costs to worry about, it was a relief not to pay for a room we couldn't use. I'm very grateful for their help and will stay there next time I'm heading that way.
