The building looks beautiful from the street, and it's been restored so well. It should be one of Kavala's main attractions, right in the heart of the old city. But despite visiting Kavala regularly, twice a year since my husband and I first came in 2019, I've never managed to book a drink or a meal there. Every attempt has gone nowhere. We've met locked doors and a snooty attitude, and now the place seems almost completely out of reach. You have to pay a fixed €22,000 to stay five nights, or you get nothing. I can't review the restaurant, bar, or rooms because I haven't been able to experience them. Some excellent bars and restaurants face the building. Go to 1901 bar and take a look from the street, because that's as close as you're likely to get.

Dear Imaret, Last summer, a friend’s recommendation brought us to the property for a visit and a meal. If I remember right, we had the chef’s tasting menu. The dishes were pleasant enough, but I’d give the meal 3 out of 5, since nothing stayed with me afterward. With a place this elegant and full of history, I expected the food to feel more refined and memorable. I recently asked about staying and was quoted €22,000 for five nights. I've stayed at some of the world's most distinguished hotels, from historic châteaux to modern luxury retreats, and I've never come across a rate like that, even for two people. I truly can't see what justifies it. In Kavala, where choices beyond the property are quite limited, the price feels even more disproportionate. I do wish you continued success. I hope the restaurant opens again to people who aren't staying at the hotel. I'd be glad to return and see if I can discover its flavors in a new light. Warm regards,
Stella G.
Please communicate with visitors more clearly. You advertise a bar and restaurant, but when we came by for coffee and brunch, a staff member told us it was “only by appointment.” Did you mean booking? Two Greek people were speaking, so there was no language barrier. It just came across as rude.

The Imaret is an impressive historic landmark in central Kavala, with cultural and architectural importance. Dating to the late 18th century, it reflects the region's Ottoman history and the city's diverse heritage. Its surroundings also offer beautiful views of the Aegean Sea. Muhammad Ali Pasha built it as a theological school and lodging for students and scholars attending the neighboring Muhammad Ali Mosque. This was part of his effort to modernize and develop Kavala while serving as Ottoman governor of Egypt and the wider region. The building brings together Ottoman and neoclassical styles, with elegant domes, detailed stonework, broad courtyards, ornate arches, marble columns, and decorated interiors. After the Ottoman Empire declined, it stopped serving its original purpose and fell into disrepair. Restoration efforts in recent decades have preserved the landmark, which now operates as a luxury boutique hotel with modern amenities and hospitality alongside its historic architecture. Visitors can explore its history, admire the architectural details, and experience the atmosphere of another era. Its transformation has helped preserve its legacy and offers visitors a memorable stay in one of Greece's most captivating destinations.

I've stayed at many five-star hotels, but this is by far the most worthwhile one to visit in Greece. The whole experience got me, from the property and surroundings to the views and polite staff. Even the little things stood out, like the note about the next day's weather and the excellent housekeeping. I'm completely taken with it!
