You’ll want some kind of transport, though driving around here seems fairly relaxed. From the foothills, it’s easy to reach Taverners in the hills or mountains, where I believe you can get amazing Cretan food. It’s a lovely retreat with great accommodation for artists, hippies, or boring old farts like us. Our host was friendly and helpful.

The room was pretty standard, and the bed was too soft for me and uncomfortable. The pool wasn’t working, even though it was advertised on their booking. We also couldn’t leave the window open because cats tore through the screens and kept coming in, however hard we tried. The place is in a quiet natural area, away from busy resorts and beaches.

Rex the dog was playful and welcoming, just like the fantastic staff, who were always friendly and ready to help. The hotel is a hidden gem in the mountains, with stunning views all around. My partner and I would happily return any time of year, and we highly recommend it.
