The welcome from Yannis, Daphne, Lena, Ekmek and the rest of the Hotel Votsala team was so warm that it outweighed the bathroom's tired look and the loo getting wet during showers. My husband, daughter and I had a roomy, cleaned-every-day room, and were lucky to have a sea view. The hotel is peaceful, with lots of sunbeds and shady spots by the sea, and the morning yoga was a brilliant way to start the day. Meals were superb, with breakfast and lunch changing from day to day. I'd especially recommend the Saturday night BBQ. We spent five days there and had plenty to explore, even with the very windy weather. Booked the hotel again, we wouldn't regret it.

The hosts, Yannis, Daphne, Lina and Christophe, and their lovely staff are what make this place possible. Guests proudly call themselves "Votsalians," and after my second visit I understand why. On my first stay, I was surprised to meet people who'd been coming back for 10, 20, 30, even 40 years. Votsala feels like a whole way of life. You can relax by the sea or in the beautiful garden, enjoy delicious breakfasts and special dinners, and join cultural, artistic and educational activities. It feeds your mind, your soul, and your stomach, and you feel part of a special community while making new friends.

What makes Votsala feel special is the extended family running it. They do far more than manage a hotel, and make you feel as if you're visiting friends. They're warm, friendly and helpful. My wife arrived with a rash on her legs, and by that afternoon they'd arranged for her to speak with a doctor and get a prescription. You can spend time with their friends or simply enjoy the place on your own. We were there for four days in early September, and it was the best part of our month in Greece. The grounds are beautiful, with broad lawns, an Aegean waterfront, a swimming jetty, boats and SUPs to take out, and views across to the mountains on the Turkish coast. The guests are friendly and interesting, and many have returned often, as we hope to. It's peaceful and refined, with more people reading than looking at their phones. The food is superb, and there's a lovely bar open every afternoon and evening. We caught part of “history week.” We'd booked before we heard about it, otherwise we'd have stayed for the whole week. The expeditions cost a nominal fee and are led by hosts with deep knowledge of history and archaeology. Their presentations about the places you visit are captivating. We were impressed and look forward to future history weeks and other themed weeks. It's not a wide beach full of sunbathers and loud music, and it doesn't have the polish of a five-star hotel. Some things are a little rough around the edges, though everything worked fine. There's no air conditioning, but the rooms are spacious and comfortable if you take sensible steps, like closing the shutters when direct sunlight hits.

Family owned for more than 20 years, this hotel has a welcoming, almost big-family feel. Guests from across Europe often return for decades, which adds to the friendly, cooperative atmosphere. It's a safe, cozy spot for children and parents, and the setting is great for a relaxing break. There's lots to do, from cooking classes and yoga to trips, alongside terrific breakfasts and food. It works well for families at any stage. Highly recommended.

We've been back to our favourite hotel many times over 20+ years. It's a short ride from the port and airport, then you can just unwind. The sea is right on the property, and the rooms are airy with natural ventilation. Great food, cheerful cleaners, lovely walks and talks, and fellow guests who are fascinating and funny. What more could you want? Thanks, Votsalians.
