Hotel Matheo Villas & Suites

We only wish we could have stayed longer. My girlfriend was worried about traveling abroad at first, but she settled in so quickly. It was our first trip abroad together, and Hotel Matheo made it a wonderful experience. The staff were caring, welcoming and always cheerful, and even upgraded our room without charging us or making it a hassle. The scenery, weather, atmosphere and surrounding area all felt just right for a couples' getaway. Hotel Matheo has everything we wanted, and we'd definitely look at coming back.

The rooms, food and cleaning were good, and nearly all the staff gave us a good experience. Constantina and the waitress were especially excellent. But the owner was very rude. When I politely asked whether the music could be turned down a little, he pointed his finger in my face three times and said, “This is my hotel, I can do whatever I want. Someone will always clean up after me.” He also pretended to spit on the floor. I moved my head to show he was crossing my boundaries, but his finger was still in my face. The party music was so loud it was hard to relax. All in all, a decent stay, but not the best.

The hotel sits a little above the village, so there's usually a pleasant breeze. Malia's shops are about 500 metres away, and there's a charming little Greek restaurant the same distance away. We had a beautifully furnished superior room of around 30 m², with wood and marble, looking out over the sea. The view was magical: sunrise, a lovely garden and olive trees as far as we could see. The hotel is very clean and exceptionally well kept. Coffee or espresso is easy to get from the machines, and the owners and their teams do their best to help with information. Georges sorted our small issues in under two minutes. When roadworks meant the bus couldn't reach the hotel on departure day, Georges drove us to it in a golf cart. The food was very good, though anyone staying more than ten days in one place knows meals can start to feel similar. In Greece there's a huge choice of local specialties, and the hotel offered organic vegetables, olives, oils, tomatoes, feta, moussaka, souvlaki, pastitsio, stuffed peppers and more. Breakfast had croissants, chocolate couques, brioches, white, brown and multigrain bread, pistolets, cake and more. The restaurant terrace was so pleasant, with very friendly, helpful staff, that we wanted to linger after dinner. The whole team, from the dining room, kitchen and cleaning staff to the bosses, were smiling and spoke different languages. Thank you to Georges, Konstantina and Madame's mother for such a warm welcome. We hope to return next year if all goes well. People who leave negative feedback should stay in their own country. This hotel deserves a perfect 10 and far more than four stars.

Loved the location and the lovely rooms, and the view from ours was great. The staff were so friendly, and the owner and his mother were lovely too. She always called my husband Mr. Johnny and made us laugh. The hotel had lots of Germans, and some of them were quite rude. We rented a car for six days and saw beautiful old-fashioned Tavernas around the island. The Greek night was great fun, with lots of dancing, and I'd definitely go back to that hotel.
